How the calculator works
- Cost per day: cigarettes per day ÷ cigarettes per pack × price per pack.
- Per year: cost per day × 365.25. For 5 and 10 years we use today's price. Tobacco duty goes up almost every year, so your real savings are probably higher.
- Life expectancy: about 20 minutes per cigarette on average, according to research from University College London (2025). This is a rough estimate for large groups.
- Payback time: the price of an aid divided by what you spend on smoking per day.
Frequently asked questions
How much does smoking cost per year?
If you smoke 15 cigarettes a day and pay €11 for a pack of 20, you spend over €3,000 a year on smoking. At a pack a day that is over €4,000 a year.
How much do you save when you quit smoking?
Exactly what you now spend on cigarettes or tobacco: at 15 cigarettes a day, about €250 a month. Over ten years that adds up to more than €30,000, before future price rises.
How much life expectancy does one cigarette cost?
According to a 2025 estimate from University College London, each cigarette costs about 20 minutes of life expectancy on average. That is an average across large groups, not a prediction for one person.
How quickly does your body recover after quitting?
Within 12 hours the carbon monoxide has left your blood. After 2 to 12 weeks your lungs and circulation work noticeably better, and after a year your risk of a heart attack has roughly halved. See the full timeline.
