Nicotine withdrawal symptoms when you quit smoking

Irritable, sleeping badly, cravings: the first weeks after quitting can be tough. This is how long it lasts, and what helps.

Which symptoms can you expect?

When you quit, your body has to get used to life without nicotine. Common symptoms are:

Not everyone gets all of them, and how strong they are varies a lot from person to person.

Timeline: how long does it last?

PeriodWhat you may notice
Day 1Cravings, restlessness. Your body is already recovering: after 12 hours the carbon monoxide has left your blood.
Days 2 to 3Often the hardest: strong cravings, irritability, poor sleep, headaches.
Weeks 1 to 2Physical symptoms ease. Cravings come mainly at fixed moments (coffee, after meals, stress).
Weeks 3 to 4Most symptoms are clearly reduced. More energy, better smell and taste.
Months 2 to 3Now and then a sudden craving. This is the period in which many people relapse.

A craving usually lasts only a few minutes. Get through those minutes and the worst has passed.

When to see your GP

See your GP if you feel low for a long time, if symptoms do not ease after a few weeks, or if you cough up blood. If you take medication such as antipsychotics or blood thinners, talk to your doctor before you quit: smoking affects how some medicines work.

Frequently asked questions

How long do nicotine withdrawal symptoms last?

Most physical symptoms peak in the first 3 days and clearly fade after 2 to 4 weeks. Cravings for a cigarette can come back for months, especially at fixed moments.

What are the worst days after quitting smoking?

For most people days 2 and 3. By then the nicotine has left your body and physical cravings are at their strongest.

Is coughing after quitting smoking normal?

Yes. Your cilia recover and clear mucus, so you may cough more in the first weeks. If it lasts longer than a few weeks or you cough up blood, see your GP.
